Pope John Paul II with the Carters on the South Portico

In this photograph, taken October 6, 1979, President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter and Pope John Paul II wave to the public from the South Portico of the White House. It was the first time a current pope had visited the White House. This photograph is part of a collection belonging to former White House Executive Chef Henry Haller. Haller served five first families and their distinguished guests as executive chef from 1966-1987.
